The main reason behind Sami’s drive is Ruby (Karen David), his childhood crush who is touring America with her father to choose a well-established Indian man to marry (and whose character is never developed beyond this description). The script very clearly pits Sami and his roommates against the white engineers at the company where Sami is employed as a lowly draftsman this rag-tag group of immigrants find themselves in a race to beat those engineers to a functioning microwave prototype. In the way that a feel-good, innocuous comedy provides commentary, Khan’s film makes it clear that what holds Sami back – and the handful of other skilled immigrant with whom he shares an apartment, a single bed and one decent suit – is the fact that he doesn’t fit in with the white-washed world of American business.

As he chases the American dream, Sami certainly bears the hallmarks of the American professional mindset: he is ambitious, single-minded and relentless. No, there is no tiger hunting in Chicago, but throughout the film, Sami remembers his awe-inspiring hero of a father who killed a tiger that was terrorizing their small village and whose reputation will forever be what Sami measures himself against. With such a familiar story, the most confusing aspect of The Tiger Hunter is its title. But although there is certainly truth to this struggle, Khan brings little detail to her story, co-written with Sameer Asad Gardezi, leaving viewers with shells of characters and obligatory ’70s references.

In line with TV comedies like “Fresh Off the Boat,” the film presents the fish-out-of-water tale of an Indian engineer, Sami Malik (Danny Pudi), who struggles to find professional work once he arrives in Chicago, a common occurrence even for skilled immigrants and one that, in part, draws on the experience of Khan’s father. The moral of the story, which I actually agree with, is “being happy is finding greatness in how you live.” I’ll give the film that.Director Lena Khan’s debut feature The Tiger Hunter, a comedy about the immigrant experience in America, garners some laughs but ultimately relies too heavily on its kitschy ’70s setting and one-dimensional characters. This sentimental interlude about a boy/man who realizes that fame and fortune are not the most important things in life, though this does not stop Sami from realizing that fame and fortune. It is the kindness of the man and his love for others that Sami must come to realize in his quest to conquer America. This little gesture, and his own story, make Babu the best character in “The Tiger Hunter” I like the flashback story to Sami’s dad, the titular character, who, while idolized as the man who saved his village from the tiger, has only acted in his role just once. One notable exception is Rizwan Manji as Babu, the guy who takes Sami in because “no-one help him” when he first arrived. Sami’s roommates, all in the same boat as he, play quirky background inhabitants without much personality. Danny Pudi does not reach much beyond his character from TV’s “Community” and never really rises above the other players. That is the shell of a story that first-time feature director (and co-writer) Lisa Khan uses to touch all the bases in this coming-to-America tale. Despite all of these obstacles, the guy gets the fame and fortune, and the girl, and everyone lives happily ever after. Then, there is the opportunity for the guy to prove himself with a brilliant idea, only to have his boss take credit. Throw into this familiar mix the guy’s need to find a place to stay, the threat of deportation and the chance meeting with another guy who invites him to stay at a place he shares with (colorful, amusing, over-educated and underemployed) roommates. But, the promise was false and he must start at the bottom in his quest to be a “professional American.”. He has the promise of a good job with good pay – just what he needs to woo his childhood sweetheart despite the animosity from her father, who thinks the guy unworthy of his daughter. "Paterson's" Rizwan Manji is the spice that lifts this cliched yet charming tale.Ī man who sees great potential in himself pulls up his well-established stakes and moves to a new place, where he does not know anyone.
